Training Correctly & Having Good Posture

Barbara on December 9th, 2007

I remember when I was little and we all had to sit at the table properly without having our backs leaning on the chair. We were always pulled up to have good posture and to never slouch. I thought that I had kept it up and had pretty good posture (and yes, I still sit forward on a chair at the table LOL). That was until Friday when I went to the Pilates class. We were doing planks and the lady taking the class came around to ensure everyone was doing them correctly – she corrected my back as it wasn’t straight. I didn’t think much of it at the time until we were doing planks on a ball and I could see myself in the mirror. OMG, I thought my back was pretty straight but it was seriously that swayed in you could use it as a skate ramp. I tried to correct it myself but my muscles just wouldn’t let me. I really need to work on it and straighten my back up – so will definitely be sticking to my Pilates class to strengthen up my core muscles. It’s amazing though, how something like not having the correct posture can really make training hard. Having good posture can help you training correctly and does not put so much pressure on your core muscles and structure. This can be overcome by simply doing the exercise yourself when you have been given a new program at the gym. Instead of getting the instructor to show you what exercises are on your program – tell them you would like to try it in front of them so they can correct anything you are doing wrong and can help you with what weights you can use so that you don’t over do it. This way, when you are let loose in the gym by yourself you are doing more good than harm to your body. Last but not least – make your workout enjoyable – you’ll love it and the results! (I know I do).
