I want more muscle

Barbara on January 17th, 2008

I had my assessment today and my trainer basically said that if I want to get into a comp, I will need to stop all the cardio, and start working hard on gaining some mass. It was my choice and the answer was easy - I want more muscle! Since I started, I have lost 7% body fat and 8kg in weight so I am at a good point now to build some serious muscle. That means no more running or cycle class *sobs uncontrollably*, changing all my meals (more food - yummy LOL) and training with weights twice a day, 5 days per week. The program he has written me is huge but I get 2 days off each week, which I’ll need off to cook everything anyway LOL. I will be starting my new program and eating plan on Monday. I won’t call my bodybuilding friend yet about my diet as it needs to be turned around completely anyway to build the muscle (and not to lose anything). I am really looking forward to this challenge and hopefully make some decent gains in the first month. Wish me luck :)

  1. Hi Barbara,
I finally joined Gold’s Gym in June and decided to shed the weight ( I wish I could blame it all on my two pregnancies) and get fit. I have a long way to go to get where you are, but I am slowly working on it. I hired a personal trainer who I work with 1 to 2 x per week. He wants me to do a lot of cardio. I was thinking about trying the Spinning ( I’ve been swimming and getting on arc trainer, plus Thai Chi and Pilates) - but I don’t know if I can handle it. I also have a problem with drinking enough water, any tips? Anyway - I also started an 8 week weight loss program on Sunday. My goal is to lose 25 lbs (12 kg) - so far I lost 1. 5lbs. Good luck to you with your challenge!

  2. Firstly - congratulations on making the decision to get healthier. The spin classes are a heap of fun - if it gets too hard while you are doing them, just sit back down and keep peddling until you can rejoin the class. The only tip I can suggest with the water is to try and have a glass at every meal and snack - before you know it, you would have had at least 6 glasses. Carry a drink bottle around with you as well - a lot of people confuse hunger with thirst, so if you feel a little hungry try having a glass of water first then wait 15-20 minutes - you’ll find most times it is thirst. Well done on losing 1.5lbs - keep being consistent and you will reach your goal :)

  3. Thanks so much Barbara for the tips and encouragement. Do you know if drinking more water actually helps with weight loss? Ive heard it before, but can’t figure out how that works. Ok, I will try and get out of my comfort zone and join a spinning class one of these days.

  4. It certainly does help so keep drinking it :)
