Day 41 - Last Run

Barbara on December 31st, 2007

My run this morning was really hard. Not so much that I couldn’t run, but the heat is just too much. It was 32 degrees again this morning and just exhausting. Running past the lake didn’t help much either - I really wanted to jump in it - and the flies are driving me insane - I don’t know how a persons ears, nose and mouth can be so appealing to them LOL. So ….. my decision has been made, today was my last run (while on holiday anyway LOL). It’s not enjoyable anymore and a few days off won’t kill me. My weights program went really well today. I am glad we have air-conditioning though as it is so hot and I really don’t want to give it up. It’s funny, my husband did a few barbell curls with me today and he thinks he has strained his arm. I shouldn’t laugh, but it was good to see how impressed he was with my weights :D My abs are still burning from their punishing workout so that’s all going good too. We have got the big new years party tonight at the park. It should be a great evening and the kids are really looking forward to it. So I hope you all keep safe and have a wonderful new years - talk to you next year ;)

Day 40 - Early Starts?

Barbara on December 30th, 2007

I am starting to think that while I am here, an early start might be easier than going for a run at 8am. I don’t think it has dropped under 40 degrees during the day and it is usually around 32 while I am running now. It was really hot this morning and I am struggling with the heat. I have obviously been spoilt by going to an air-conditioned gym LOL. What amazes me is the people you see running during the day – I have no idea how they have the stamina to do it when it is that hot. Don’t get me wrong, I love the heat, but to be in the full sun during the hottest part of the day is just too much. I am thinking I could do my weights program in the morning and go for a run at night (which is what I usually do when I am at home anyway). Either that or have an early start and go for a run as soon as I get up 1st which would be around 6am. Not that it really matters much as we will be heading home soon. Although, it would be a great routine to get into, and I could continue the early run when I get home. Oh, decisions, decisions ………. Will let you know what I decide, later :)

Being Competitive and Setting Personal Goals

Barbara on December 29th, 2007

I am very competitive and continually set personal goals for myself. They are only little goals, but they mean a lot to me each and every time I reach one. Simple things like running one minute faster than the last time or getting to a certain spot (while running or walking) by the end of a song. Or to be able to do something by the end of the week or month – like lifting a certain weight or running a certain distance. I love a challenge too – on the competitive side of things if someone says they don’t believe I could do something, I will try to do it and if I think it is possible, I will keep trying until I can do it. Although, most of the challenges I tackle I make for myself. I want to do bodybuilding for my own personal satisfaction and achievement. I have had people say I am too old but like I have said many times before age has no barrier if you want to achieve something. I’ve seen bodybuilders in their 60’s and they look awesome. To be told you look ripped is a huge compliment (I was told this last night by another bodybuilder – it was nice to get but personally, I don’t think I do just yet). To be fully ripped is definitely a goal I have, and I am getting there - slowly. I have been asked if I am going to compete – by my trainer and by a few more people now. The answer now is yes, I’d love to compete – that is definitely on my list of goals and I look forward to that challenge. I think being competitive and setting personal goals for yourself can be very rewarding – so long as you are realistic. So for those of you who do it, stay positive and I wish you success :)

Day 39 - Pins & Needles

Barbara on December 28th, 2007

I wonder if anyone else has experienced pins & needles in their stomach while running. It is the weirdest feeling and I don’t think I have ever experienced it before. It only seemed to be on one side (the right side) and almost felt numb. I will need to look into it as it was very weird. My run was good though and there were other runners and walkers about. The mornings are definitely getting hotter. It was 26 degrees when I got back from my run this morning. I have been really good with my diet too. I am so glad I made all my 1st lunches before we came – it has certainly made it easier. Most of my dinners have been cold meat or tuna with salad – although we went out for dinner last night and I had fresh king prawns. They were delicious (except when I accidentally sprayed prawn poop all over myself – that was gross LOL). My weights and abs workouts were great today – I put in a really good effort and will probably be sore tomorrow. I am missing gym though – I really enjoy going there and although my holiday program is good, the atmosphere just isn’t the same. Only one week to go and I can go back there – yay :D

Day 38 - Okay, it’s hot LOL

Barbara on December 27th, 2007

It’s certainly warming up here. I went for my run this morning and am so glad I wore shorts. There are so many friendly people up here as well. It’s amazing how many times I say good morning. It’s so nice – a lot nicer than where I live anyway. I decided not to do my abs training today as I only did it yesterday so will just make it a big workout day tomorrow and then have a day to recover. I don’t think it will make much difference to my program. I can get back to normal on Monday when I start it all again :)

Day 37 - Hot and Cold

Barbara on December 26th, 2007

This morning was one of those weird days when the sun was shining and hot, but the wind was cold. I went for my run (with a jumper on) and ended up having to rip the jumper off half way down the track and tie it around my waist. I think I’ll just put up with the cold wind to start with as it isn’t taking very long to warm up. My weights workout was interesting today – we seem to have lost half the room in the annexe as my sister and her family are here as well – so my walking lunges became two step turning lunges LOL. I added my abs training in today as well – that was hard but well worth the effort. It was certainly hot by the afternoon so I was glad to get the workout over with.

Day 36 - All By Myself

Barbara on December 25th, 2007

Merry Christmas!! It felt weird going for my run this morning as I was the only one on the track. No-one was around. Maybe I am the only crazy person to be out running on Christmas morning LOL. It was such a beautiful morning though – it was about 21 degrees, the sun was shining, the birds were all out, kids were riding their new bikes and scooters, I saw one family playing cricket on their front lawn and another playing bat tennis. My legs and bum are a bit sore from yesterday’s workout – I am so pleased with that as I was a little worried I didn’t have enough weights on the bar. Obviously I did :) My kids certainly know me as I got a new personal training diary, a water bottle, hand towels and ankle weights from them for Christmas LOL. They will certainly all come in handy :) My abs training…….didn’t happen. I know, that’s really bad but I was so busy racing around cooking, cleaning and making sure everyone had food and drinks that I ran out of time. I will add the abs workout to my training tomorrow to make up for it.

Day 35 - Watch out for the bugs

Barbara on December 24th, 2007

Note to self – remember to watch out for the bugs when running outdoors. I set off this morning for my run along the lake and was doing really well until I ran through a swarm of bugs. Luckily I only choked on a few of them and not the whole 500 that I ran through LOL. It didn’t stop me from running though, I kept on going. It was pretty hard to start off with as I was running into the wind and it has been awhile since I have ran outside but once I turned around to run back, it was a breeze LOL. Surprisingly it didn’t take me as long as I thought it would either - It was a 4km round trip all up and I felt pretty good afterward. I am going to enjoy doing that each morning :) My weights workout was a bit of a challenge as I had to figure out all the weights. It didn’t take me long I suppose but having the kids as my audience grunting and puffing with me didn’t help me much LOL. I can feel that I have definitely worked out though – which is what I wanted. So my holiday program (so far) gets a thumbs up :)

And we’re off - Merry Christmas

Barbara on December 23rd, 2007

Well the day has finally come where we can pack up the car and head off to our van for 2 weeks. It is going to be fantastic. Of course, the first thing in line to be put into the car are all my weights, dumbells and barbell LOL. I’ve packed my holiday program and made some lunches so I’m all set. I am hoping to be able to update my blog while I am away but it might need to be every second day as I am not sure when I can get down to the local library and hop online. If I don’t get a chance to hop back on before the 25th - I hope you all have a super merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Please keep it safe over the holidays and for all of you that are training and watching what you eat, don’t be too hard on yourselves - but keep up the great work! LOL - Talk to you all soon :D

Are you serious?

Barbara on December 22nd, 2007

I get asked that quite a bit – usually it has got to do with food. I am one of those people that can eat exactly the same thing day in and day out and never get bored of eating it. I love food and my kids are forever rolling their eyes whenever they hear me saying “I’m hungry” because I am always eating LOL. We are going away tomorrow for two weeks and I cooked up all my 1st lunches yesterday (I have two lunches every day LOL). I made some Chilli Tuna Rice, Tuna Soy Rice and Sweet Potato & Spinach soup to take away with me. So, yes – I am serious!! If, I want all my hard work of training to pay off, then I am happy to spend 4 hours in the kitchen preparing the necessary meals to make that work! My Christmas lunch will be different to everyone else but that’s my choice, I know I will still enjoy it and you don’t all have to eat the same – so long as we are having a wonderful time together as a family, it shouldn’t matter what is on our plates. Mmmmmmm food *drools* - now I’m hungry LOL
